government health care for the poor; the ever more deadly syrian civil war; florida's liberal gun laws; teens on gun violence. plus, oscar wild cards and front runners. but first, the other news of the day. here's hari sreenivasan. >> sreenivasan: a new winter storm blasted its way across the nation's midsection today, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain and even thunder and lightning. weather warnings and watches extended to at least 20 states, from new mexico all the way to virginia. in parts of kansas and colorado the snow fell at a rate of more than two inches an hour. it caused whiteout conditions, shutting down highways, schools and some state legislatures. forecasters said the system will push on to the great lakes and appalachians, with a spin-off storm dumping heavy snow on new england. the snowfall in the plains brought some relief to the drought stricken region, but not enough. in fact, government climate experts warned the drought is likely to continue through at least spring. drought conditions are also expected to spread to california, texas and florida. currently, just over half

. if you go to florida where it is blue and pink, hard freeze warnings. they could look at tampa temperatures around 30 degrees. they had wind chill factros ors in the 30's. cold air off to the north and west and the 24-hour temperature change we are 10 degrees colder. milder air is on the way and it will take a little time to arrive and as we get closer to tuesday -- around 50 degrees. it feels like two in pittsburg and hgih pressure overhead. a very cold start to monday, at 15 and 22 degrees and then we have a warming trend. doppler radar shows some flurries off to frederick county. it is a conversational type of flurry. temperatures will be cold tomorrow. a cold front on tuesday and temperatures in the lwoer 20's and tomorrow, look for sunshine. clowsuds roll in late tomorrow and our extended outlook shows temperatures that will drop into -- you have this sweater bug again. those are our temperatures on tuesday and wednesday into the 40's. >> and we were jealous about mchenry in florida. >> the lead is that it is warm down there. we take you down there and check in with brett

florida is not alone in that regard although it was one of the first off the mark. florida s.t.o.m.p. program has been implemented in a number of different states from indiana to louisiana to pennsylvania. so north and south, east and west. such that "the wall street journal" called 2011 the year of school choice. and 2012 had even more school choice programs being implemented around the country. so at this point we are serving a dramatically altered cascade. so that's kind of a preamble to the types of world in which we are living right now. you may want to ask yourself okay, why are we doing this? what -- why might we have moved from a choice environment where students had, families had very little choice. the choice was essentially limited to the residential location for all intents and purposes, to a system in which in many states, many families have the opportunity to attend private school using public money. those who aren't going to private schools, many of them are going to start or schools, quasi-public schools. even within public schools, even within the traditional

in sanford, florida, that george zimmerman shot and killed trayvon martin, an unarmed teenager. zimmerman goes on trial for murder in june. he claims he's protected by florida's "stand your ground" law which allows anyone who feels threatened to use lethal force. mark strassmann tells us that florida and other states are now reconsidering these laws. >> just don't understand how something like this could happen. >> reporter: ron davis got the call every parent dreads last november. his 17-year-old son jordan had been shot twice in the parking lot of this gas station. >> what they did was they pulled a sheet up to his neck because they didn't want know see the gunshot wound and i went over and i hugged my son and i kissed my son. and i said good-bye to my son. >> reporter: it must have been excruciating. >> it still is. >> reporter: police say jordan davis was in a car with three other teens when 45-year-old michael dunn demanded they lower their music. an argument began. dunn told police he thought the teens had a shotgun so he pulled out his handgun and fired eight or nine shots. jordan

award. pantene expert collection. >>> florida republican governor rick scott announced his support this week for expanding medicare making florida -- yes, i lost my breath because it was so shocking. making florida only the seventh state with a republican governor to opt into the expansion. >> while the federal government is committed to paying 100% of the cost, i cannot in good conscience deny floridians that need access to health care. we will support a three-year expansion of our medicare program under the new health care law. as long as the federal government meets their commitment to pay 100% of the cost during that time. >> scott's announcement as he seen there in that hostage video is in many way a shocking development because rick scott who once led the country's largest for-profit hospital change has one of the largest proponents of the medicare act. he spent money to lead that. and florida fought the affordable care act only to lose. in june, scott responded to the court's decision upholding the aca. >> it is so disappointing. this is going to be devastating for patients.
